When I first heard about the clean beauty movement, I immediately imagined ineffective formulations wrapped up in brown, granola-esque packaging. Initially, I snubbed the idea and continued on my way – Urban Decay and NARS in tow. Years later, I started looking into the logistics of the cosmetic industry and the complete lack of transparency and regulation surrounding it. I quickly realized there was a dire need for resultant products that were both safe and as aesthetically pleasing and luxurious as their department-store counterparts.
I didn’t make the transition to clean beauty overnight. In fact, it took me years of testing and trying products to eventually land on what worked for my skin type. I think the best (and certainly the least overwhelming) way to introduce healthy products into your routine, is to implement them one at a time. If you run out of mascara, pick up a healthy swap instead. Make it easy on yourself (and your wallet) and don’t try to replace everything all at once.
My approach to makeup has changed over the years. At one point, I went through a serious purple eye shadow phase and then there was the black eyeliner moment where I’d pencil it on thicker than a magic marker (note: not cute). Did I mention my deep devotion to shimmery bronzer that looked more like an infection than a beachy glow? You live and you learn, right? And you sure as hell delete your MySpace where all of those moments were captured for the world to see.
As a model, I spend a lot of time in the makeup chair. When I’m shooting, my face is spackled in (what feels like) an inch of products and potions that look good under harsh lighting. It’s part of the gig and I can’t complain. When I’m not working, I like to let my skin breathe as much as possible. When I’m going out I use only a handful of natural products that enhance what my momma gave me and easily can pull myself together in less than 10 minutes.
Lastly, I have to end on a cliché note. Beauty truly comes from the inside out. You can roll your eyes (because even I am), but seriously, it’s true. There isn’t a single product on the market that can replace a healthy, nourishing diet, drinking enough water, sleeping enough and happiness. When you feel good you look good. When you eat well, your skin looks radiant. And when your life is filled with joy and gratitude, you glow from the inside out.
So with that, I’ve listed some of my top clean beauty resources as well as some of the products I keep in my makeup bag. Please comment below with some of your favorite healthy products or leave me a question – I always love hearing from you!!
